Face of Dentistry: Dr. Mike Abougoush

Having always loved working with his hands, creating things and being artistic, Dr. Abougoush developed an early interest in biology and sciences.

“My interests were nurtured and developed by my uncle, whose dental office I’d spent a lot of time in during summer vacations in Calgary,” said Dr. Abougoush.

He considers those moments as the building blocks that lead to discovering dentistry was the perfect blend of his strengths and interests. By embracing the life path that his uncle had guided him toward, this is where it all began for Penticton’s Face of Dentistry.

“Since I always knew I wanted to be a dentist, I had a vision of having a family dental practice in the Okanagan.”

But before he could accomplish this dream, Dr. Abougoush sharpened his dental knowledge by learning the business of dentistry while associating at a practice in Vancouver and Richmond between 2001 and 2005 before moving to Summerland, B.C. to join Dr. John McIntosh at Summerland Dental Centre later in 2005.

“At the time, SDC was a pleasant family dental practice located in a new third-floor space with expansive views of the surrounding town and countryside, but I knew immediately that we had the potential to improve and better serve our community.” 

That sparked a new wave of passion, education and investment into the Summerland Dental Centre. Dr. Abougoush and Dr. McIntosh joined the Kois Center of Advanced Dental Education which propelled them to the next level of service and clinical excellence. 

Still not satisfied, Dr. Abougoush would continue along his path by beginning his journey in Dental Implant Surgery in 2006, at the Ickert Teaching Center in Langley. Since completing that curriculum in 2008, he has taken more and more advanced courses in surgery and dental implant therapy from world-renowned surgeons to provide you with advanced dental services right here in the Okanagan.

Soon after, both Dr. Abougoush and Dr. McIntosh completed the Ickert and Kois curriculums in 2009, then Dr. Abougoush went on to become a Kois mentor in 2010. 

“With the mentorship of my uncle, Tally Abougoush, along with Dr. John Kois and Dr. Norm Ickert, my goals and visions of my practice and career crystallized further.”

In 2015, Dr. Abougoush assumed full ownership of Summerland Dental Centre, allowing Dr. McIntosh to take more holidays to enjoy his newest passion, his grandkids. 

Now that Dr. Abougoush had achieved his dream of owning a family dental practice in the Okanagan, it was time to bring the vision to life. He renovated and reinvented their brand while expanding their office to better reflect the services and values they provide to their patients. 

“If you get complacent in your education or your investment in your practice and patients, you can quickly become a dinosaur,” joked Dr. Abougoush. “I will always ensure that Summerland Dental Centre is implementing the latest in clinical research and advanced technologies so we can continue to provide leading-edge services and the highest quality care for our patients,” concluded Penticton’s Face of Dentistry. 

Evolving into a new state-of-the-art practice, Dr. Abougoush has expanded hours to include evenings and weekends to better serve the community and keep a healthy smile on your face.
